for calypso and flamenco music into a successful career as a producer and critic of what is now termed world music. A polyglot fluent in six languages, Roberts published four non-fiction books (three of them on music), a handful of short mystery stories and, as a young man, some poetry. His musical researches could be as surprising as they were profound.
