Poetic Obituaries: In September 1979 [William] Wolfe stood against

the revered Dr Robert McIntyre for the party presidency and lost, but ousted him a year later with backing from the Left. He left the post prematurely in 1982, amid a storm over an article he wrote in the Church of Scotland's magazine criticising Britain's acceptance of an ambassador from the Vatican.

Wolfe was at various times president of Heriot-Watt University students' association, treasurer of Scottish CND, secretary of the Scottish Poetry Library, treasurer of the Saltire Society and a member of the Forestry Commission's Scottish national committee.
