the Midlands and was awarded an Arvon/Jerwood Mentorship in Poetry for 2010. This poem has the feel of a Carol in its celebration of both winter and the birth of Jesus. ("let flinty silence sing") but its alertness to the natural world gives it a lovely human quality. The lady is a real mother.
