News at Eleven: A University of Regina professor recommends

an alternative remedy to modern society's penchant for popping pills for their ills--the healing power of 19th century poet Emily Dickinson.

"She was a particularly inward poet who explored courageously states of pain caused by loss, sickness and the Civil War," said Cindy MacKenzie. "The kind of consolation we derive from her is based on her honest confrontation with these difficult challenges in life and periods of pain and explaining them in her poetry in a way that doesn't smooth it over or offer you some sort of platitude."
