Dear Poetry Aficionados,
Poetry & Poets in Rags blog
Ayat al-Qurmezi (or al-Ghermezi, or al-Gormezi), the young Bahraini woman, who was arrested and tortured for reading poetry, is back on top of the poetry news this week. The first interviews with her since her recent release are coming out. We follow this story with a link to an article on Ruth Maier, an extraordinary young Viennese poet who was murdered in Auschwitz. We then read about Liao Yiwu, the Chinese poet and dissident who recently told how he escaped to Germany. And there's much more very interesting articles from around the globe in our News at Eleven section. It's quite a varied week, with profiles reviews, and events.
In Great Regulars, let me steer you to Sarah Crown's article, which takes issue with the Forward prize shortlist including only male poets. A discussion follows her article, with some very good comments. There's also a really neat poem by Kim Addonizio amongst the seven good ones brought to us by Garrison Keillor. Now I'm in the pickle of not mentioning others for the sake of mentioning the ones that are coming to mind. But let me add that you wouldn't want to click out before reading Carol Rumens' and Frank Wilson's articles, and then, as usual, taking the scroll through our Poetic Obituaries section.
A rich week of news in poetry. Thank for clicking in.
Yours,
Rus
