Frederick's most reliable moneymakers. Local merchants have used her name and image since the early 1900s to attract tourists and sell local products, including women's stockings, hams and canned vegetables. I remember eating Barbara Fritchie chocolates as a child after touring the house.
"Her name was merchandising gold," said Carrie Blough, curator of the Historical Society of Frederick County. She organized a current exhibition of Fritchie products and memorabilia.
Nobody has put Mary Quantrell's name on a can of peas.
