Poetic Obituaries: Out of the tradition

of Langston Hughes she [Jayne Cortez] was a jazz poet, performing her poetry with her own band the Firespitters, which also featured her son, Denardo Coleman on drums, Cortez' son from her first marriage to Ornette Coleman, considered one of the world's best jazz artists.

But the content of her work was as political as Baraka's, as the name of her band suggests, and best seen in her poem RAPE, which is too politically graphic to print here.
