Great Regulars: Is it really possible to still think that?

Whereas [Anne] Carson's work in translation has remained fresh and vital, the original work has lost its irreverence, its charm, its dashed-off erudition, weird lists and stand-up essays. The attraction so many people, especially young people, feel when reading Carson has to do I think with her stern but casual diction, its feeling of being both learned and dressed-down, affectless and brimming with feeling, like sensing someone smiling behind a mask. Red Doc> is ponderous and po-faced, and prodigiously spendthrift with its publisher's supply of paper, setting the poem in a two-inch, centre-justified column.
