for four years. Charles was on the board of directors for Mental Health Services for East Central Indiana 1974-1977. He was the recipient for a Marshall University Alumni Community Achievement Award 1993, Named Alumnus of Year at East Bank High School, WV 1977; Fellow Ind. Acad. Science; member of the Nat. Assn. State Legislators (Life member); National Audubon Society, Indiana Audubon Society (past president, conservation award 1977), East Central Indiana Audubon Society (president 1988-90; conservation award 1984); Sigma Xi Research Society (Life member & president Ball State University Chapter); Board of Directors Hoosier Environment Council 1990-93; Republican; and Presbyterian. Avocations included birdwatching, travel, languages, genealogy, history; and writing poetry.
