Poetic Obituaries: [Daniel] Hoffman's first book of poems,

"An Armada of Thirty Whales," was chosen by W. H. Auden for the Yale Younger Poets Prize in 1954. His other books of poetry include "Hang-Gliding From Helicon" (1988), "Darkening Water" (2002), "Makes You Stop and Think: Sonnets" (2005) and "The Whole Nine Yards" (2009). A memoir of his war years, "Zone of the Interior," was published in 2000. In 1973, he succeeded Josephine Jacobsen as consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress, a post known since 1985 as the poet laureate consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress.

Mr. Hoffman's wife, Elizabeth McFarland, a poet and editor, died in 2005.
